Anesthetic

Essential oil that produces a loss of sensation when applied topically (see Analgesic and Anodyne):

  • Ravensara (Cryptocarya agathophylla (van der Werff)

Anodyne

Essential oil used to relieve pain when applied externally (see Analgesic and Anesthetic):

  • Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

  • Chamomile Roman (C. nobile)

  • Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

  • Mustard (Brassica nigra)

  • Peppermint (M. xpiperita)

  • Vetiver (V. zizanioides)

  • Yarrow (A. millefolium)


Antinociceptive

Essential oil that can inhibit nociception (i.e., the sensation of pain): Basil O. basilicum and lemon C. limonum


Antiphlogistic

Essential oil used to reduce inflammation or swelling:

  • Chamomile Roman C. nobile

  • jasmine J. grandiflorum

  • patchouli P. cablin

  • pine P. sylvestris
