The Blend

Note: I do consider the Patchouli Peppermint combo in Germs & Sickness Blend 1 to be the stronger of the two, but both are highly effective. Use that one that smells the best to you.

Cautions & Contraindications

A note about toxicity: toxic constituent refers to the constituent that can become a toxin in your body if used longer than the recommended time or used more than the recommended dosage.

  • Sandalwood - The potentially toxic constituent is the terpene alcohol borneol. Sandalwood oil may, in rare cases, cause dermatitis and allergic reactions. It is contraindicated for diseases of the kidney.

  • Ylang Ylang- Undiluted use on highly sensitive skin is contraindicated due to the phenol isoeugenol. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. For topical use, dilute it to at least 0.8% in a finished product. It is best avoided for use on highly sensitive skin as it may cause sensitization. Always use a skin patch test if in doubt. In Japan, it is considered a high-risk sensitizer and potentially a cause of pigmented contact dermatitis. A 2014 Indian study also states it is a common skin sensitizer and has identified the main sensitizer as a constituent knows as dihydro-di-isoeugenol. However, Tisserand quotes a 2008 study that shows the culprit is the isoeugenol when ylang ylang was tested on guinea pigs. Nevertheless, as stated above, avoid it in any instances of highly sensitive skin, conduct a skin patch test, and always dilute properly.
