Cautions & Contraindications
A note about toxicity: toxic constituent refers to the constituent that can become a toxin in your body if used longer than the recommended time or used more than the recommended dosage.
Grapefruit - Expressed grapefruit’s C. x paradisi photosensitive effect is documented by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) as it contains varying levels of bergapten. IFRA recommends essential oils that contain bergapten should be diluted to a 0.1% dilution rate whenever the skin will be exposed to ultra violet light. This is for wash off or leave on products. A skin patch test is required as it may also cause skin irritation. It is advisable to avoid with hypertension due to reports of the blood pressure elevating activity of limonene. Plant species in the Citrus genus are members of the Rutaceae family and produce coumarins and furanocoumarins in their fruits (both peel and pulp). Furanocoumarins can cause photosensitization when applied topically or ingested. Coumarins and furanocoumarins can also interfere with some medication metabolism when consumed. The peel extracts of mandarin Citrus reticulata Blanco, and sweet orange Citrus. sinensis (L.) Osbeck species have been shown to contain little to no coumarin and furanocoumarin constituents. The peel extracts of micrantha Citrus micrantha Wester, combava Citrus hystrix D.C., citron Citrus medica L., pumelo Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr., grapefruit Citrus paradisi Macf., bitter (sour) orange Citrus aurantium L., lemon Citrus limon (L.) Burm., lime Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swing., and bergamot Citrus aurantifolia var bergamia species have been shown to contain significant levels of coumarins or furanocoumarins. Appropriate cautions need to be taken when using the peel extracts of these citrus species to avoid photosensitization or medication interactions. Note rectified or distilled citrus peel essential oils do not contain furocoumarins also known as furanocoumarins.
